Product research
Search relevance feedback questions
Find whether product search returns the wrong items, uses unfamiliar terms, or leaves people unable to narrow a large result set.
- Who to ask
- Users who recently searched within your product or catalog.
- When to ask
- Immediately after a search task.
Questions to adapt
- What were you looking for?
- What search terms did you use?
- Which result looked most promising?
- What made the results difficult to use?
- What filter or detail would have helped?
Use the answers
Group failures by vocabulary, missing content, ranking, and filtering. Test repeated customer phrases against the search experience and validate the expected result before adjusting relevance rules.
Keep the research useful
A low result count can be correct for a narrow query. Evaluate task success rather than optimizing result volume alone.
Collect the feedback in Formkii
Start a short survey with a clear introduction and a consistent reference period. Use choice questions where you need comparable categories and open text where the explanation matters. Preview the survey with someone who understands the task, then share the published link with the relevant participants. Review written answers alongside response counts, and export to CSV if you need to group themes in a spreadsheet.
